Lot Essay

This pot-pourri has very similar dolphin-supports to a pair of Louis XVI pot-pourris sold from the Réne Fribourg Collection, Sotheby's London, 18 October 1963, lot 740. Related dolphin-supports appear on a set of four candlesticks, supplied to Marie-Antoinette for the Cabinet de la Méridienne at Versailles in 1781 by Claude-Jean Pitoin (maître 1778), illustrated in P. Verlet, Les Bronzes Dorés Français du XVIIIe siècle, Paris, 1987, p. 38, fig. 29, of which two are now in the Wallace Collection, London (F.164)
