The vase, designed in the manner of an antique cinerary urn, is likely to have formed part of the collection of sculpture and antiquities assembled by Francis, 5th Duke of Bedford (d. 1802), who shortly before his death acquired the celebrated Lanti vase from Hadrian's Villa and which in turn formed the centrepiece of his sculpture gallery at Woburn Abbey, Bedfordshire
