4° (182 x 142mm). Title with woodcut portrait of author, woodcut initial. Provenance: Samuel Linse (ownership inscription on final leaf dated 1660); Robert Honeyman IV (book label, sold Sotheby's London, 11 November 1980, lot 2652).

FIRST EDITION of Ries's "comprehensive work . . . which far
surpassed his books written at Erfurt, especially in the number of examples" (DSB, XI, p.456-8). Most of the work had been completed by 1525, but it was not published until 1550, after Elector Maurice of Saxony had advanced the printing costs. Because of the expense, the book was reprinted only once, in 1616. Smith describes Ries as "the best exponent of practical arithmetic of the middle of the century in Germany": he surpassed his predecessors in the clear and methodical presentation of his material, and "did more than any previous author to spread knowledge of arithmetic" (DSB). Smith Rara Arithmetica I, pp. 250-2; Adams R-535.
