Lot Essay

Rather than from the Lega themselves this mask was probably carved by one of the many groups influenced by Lega art. Marc Felix has kindly suggested that it may be from the Nyindu to the South-East of the Lega, but he has also seen the motif on the forehead on masks from the area of Shabunda, north of the Lega and close to the southern Kumu.
