Lot Essay

Gould stated 'A fine example of this species having been killed in England, another instance is thereby afforded of the fact that many birds whose natural homes are in the northern and eastern portions of Asia wander occasionally into countries further west.'

The bird in the illustration was shot near Lewes, on December 23rd 1868, and exhibited at the Zoological Society in January 1869. The singing male is shown above, with the female below.

DISTRIBUTION: Breeds north and central Eurasia between 65°N and 47°N. Winters Iran to northern India and Burma. Rare vagrant to Britain with less than 20 records
