Equestrian portrait
probably Deccan, circa 1700

gouache heightened with gold on paper, in Mughal style, in a hilly landscape, the noble, riding a bay stallion, holds a hawk on his right hand, five attendants accompany him on foot and a further group, both on foot and on horseback, follow with an elephant, gold margin between black rules, (very minor rubbing and spotting, slight creasing to edges)
miniature 7¾ x 11¼in. (19.7 x 28.6cm.)

Lot Essay

An inscription on the reverse names the man depicted as Ja'far Khan.
Interestingly the painting is on European paper, though backed with Indian paper.
