Lot Essay

The arms are those of Vane impaling Fitzroy for Henry Vane (d.1758), eldest son and heir of Gilbert, 2nd Baron Barnard and his wife Grace, daughter of Charles Fitzroy, 1st Duke of Cleveland and Southampton (and grand-daughter of Charles II), whom he married in 1725. Henry Vane succeeded his father as 3rd Baron Barnard in 1753, was created Earl of Darlington in 1754 and died in 1758

A similar covered bowl, by Edward Feline, London, circa 1730, is now in the Al Tajir Collection (exhibited: London, Christie's, The Glory of the Goldsmith, January 1990, no. 66.). Unlike the present example, which was commissioned to celebrate a marriage, the Feline bowl and cover was the gift of King George II to his god-daughter Lady Emilia Mary Lennox, second daughter of Charles, 2nd Duke of Richmond (d.1750). The similarities extend to the use of heraldic supporter handles, crest finial and applied strapwork to both body and cover

This bowl and cover is recorded in an inventory of plate, The Property of Sir Philip Sassoon Bt., 25 Park Lane W1, compiled by Crichton Brothers of 22 Old Bond Street, W. 1., in January 1930
