maker's mark of Samuel Herbert and Company, London, 1754

Shaped-oval and on spreading foot, the foot and sides pierecd with latticework and with gadrooned and shell borders and with detachable swing handle applied with a rococo cartouche engraved with a crest, the basket engraved with a coat-of-arms and engraved beneath the base with later inscription, marked on reverse - 14½in. (37cm.) long

The inscription reads 'E Dono B. Cust Baronetti Augst 31o 1775. The arms are those of Cust impaling another
