(Date shaved in imprint, margins cropped at bottom with occasional loss, mostly affecting catchwords, marginal tear on H1 crossing text, some marginal browning.) 19th-century half vellum, marbled boards; quarter morocco box. Provenance: H1v with character's name written in at foot, L1v with character's name altered, in a contemporary hand -- Beverly Chew (morocco label) -- purchased from John F. Fleming, New York, 20 January 1969.
FIRST EDITION of Massinger's best known comedy. Based on Middleton's A Trick to catch the Old One (1608), it far surpassed its model, especially in the character of the villainous Sir Giles Overreach. Copies are found frequently cropped.
