4o (173 x 122 mm). Title with woodcut device (McKerrow 311). Woodcut initials, type ornaments. (Date shaved in imprint, margins cropped at bottom with occasional loss, mostly affecting catchwords, marginal tear on H1 crossing text, some marginal browning.) 19th-century half vellum, marbled boards; quarter morocco box. Provenance: H1v with character's name written in at foot, L1v with character's name altered, in a contemporary hand -- Beverly Chew (morocco label) -- purchased from John F. Fleming, New York, 20 January 1969.

FIRST EDITION of Massinger's best known comedy. Based on Middleton's A Trick to catch the Old One (1608), it far surpassed its model, especially in the character of the villainous Sir Giles Overreach. Copies are found frequently cropped.
