MILTON, John. Paradise lost. A Poem in Ten Books. London: Printed by S. Simmons, and to be sold by S. Thomson...H. Mortlack...M. Walker...and R. Boulter, 1668.
4o (173 x 129 mm). (First two quires [A-a] restored along gutter folds, a few ruled borders shaved.) Contemporary speckled dark calf, ruled and decorated in blind (front hinge cracked); quarter morocco slipcase. Provenance: "CR" (early reader with a few marginal notations) -- purchased from Seven Gables Bookshop, New York.
FIRST EDITION, title-page corresponding with Amory's issue no. 2 (the traditional 4th title). The seven preliminary leaves contain 'The Argument,' a defense of 'The Verse,' and the errata, but do not include 'The printer to the reader' on \Kp\kA2r (suggesting the preliminaries were supplied from a later issue [see Grolier 604]). See Grolier Wither to Prior 602 and 604; Wing M2139.
