After World War I Royce began work on his designs for a totally new chassis for a smaller car. It emerged in 1922 as the 20hp or "Twenty" and was specifically designed as an owner/driver car. It had the first monobloc six cylinder engine with detachable cylinder heads and overhead valves. The popularity of the car was due to its amazing flexibility and simplicity. Performance was above average for the period - approximately 70mph depending on the coachwork. The 20hp remained in production until 1929, by which time nearly 3,000 had been produced and to this day has remained a firm favourite with Rolls-Royce enthusiasts, because it is so practical and usable in today's traffic conditions.

The patented flexible body design developed in France by Henri Weymann proved very popular during the 1920s and into the 1930s due to its light weight, freedom from cracking, drumming and creaking and is the coachwork fitted by Park Ward upon this remarkably original example. After some 66 years the fabric body has started to let the manufacturers claims down a little as, understandably, the material has started to crack. This vehicle has been in the same family ownership since 1948 when purchased by the present owners father and is delightfully unrestored and has a patina of age so rarely seen.

While the 20hp has not been used on the road since 1975 on a recent inspection the engine ran very smoothly and quietly and the brakes worked efficiently . The radiator shutters work, all the windows operate except for the driver's. The only non-original items fitted we noticed were the side lights and a modern coil. The spares include the foot pump, spare wheel, wheel brace/hammer, C-spanner and a grease gun. The interior is finished in its original brown leather upholstery which again shows its age. Both doors are forward opening and the front windsceen is hinged.
