1921 STANDARD 11.6HP TWO SEATER TOURER WITH DICKEY
Registration No. XD 9979
Chassis No. SL015808
Engine No. 16074
Blue with black interior
Engine: four cylinder, overhead exposed valves, 1,598cc; Gearbox: three speed manual; Brakes: drums; Suspension; front, quarter elliptic, rear, semi-elliptic. Right hand drive.
It was probably the name of the company that lead to its demise in the 1960s. When the company was founed in 1903, the name "Standard" expressed a height to be maintained, a flag to be flown, but sixty years later it was interpreted as something rather less than deluxe. The Standard company did contribute to the British motor industry and continued to do so through its association with Triumph and the British Leyland group.
At first Standard produced a wide range of large six cylinder cars along with their other fours and twos. After the First World War there was no attempt to revive these large engined cars and the company concentrated on the smaller varieties.
The revived 9.5hp model of 1919 was followed by the 11.6hp in 1920, with exposed overhead valves. These early vintage Standards had no sides to their radiator shells. The 11.6 was produced until 1924.
This car has been with its present owner since 1965. It was repainted mid blue in the late 1970s and is described as being in perfectly good condition for its age. The last MoT expired in March 1994, but it is hoped that there will be a new MoT by the time of the auction.
