Lot Essay

King Vittorio Emanuele I married Maria Teresa, daughter of Ferdinand of Habsburg, Duke of Modena, Archduke of Austria on 25 April 1789. He commanded the Sardinian forces against the French 1792-96 and accompanied his brother King Carlo Emanuele IV to Sardinia in 1799, restored to Piedmont, Savoy, Nice and later Genoa. He abdicated following a revolt in Piedmont in favour of his brother Carlo Felice on 13 March 1821.
A similar miniature was in the collection of King Umberto II of Italy, sold Sotheby's, Geneva, 12 November 1984, lot 52.
