Rectangular box with rounded corners and slightly concave sides, the cover, sides and base engraved with wavy horizontal engine-turning forming an ozier pattern of small lozenges, the lid framed by a broad raised band boldly cast with green gold foliage and flowers including thistles, matching thumbpiece, the base with polished gold edges, the interior of the lid engraved with a long presentation inscription including a list of the military exploits of the presentee

According to an inscription engraved at the inside of the lid, a present 'FROM THE OFFICERS of the 71.t Highland Light Infantry, to their esteemed Friend Paymaster Hugh Mackenzie, who served in that Corps, from 5t. Oct. 1780, to 19t. May 1824.'
