H. R. H. The Princess Augusta Sophia was the second daughter of King George III and Queen Charlotte. She died officially unmarried but is said to have secretly married Sir Brent Spencer about 1812.
An almost identical oval head and shoulders gold enamel after Ross by Henry Pierce Bone, signed and dated October 1840 (one month after Princess Augusta's death), was commissioned by Queen Victoria (Sotheby's, London, 15 November 1982, lot 38).
