Towards the end of the 17th century the use of special carafes became common practice in the North of Europe. 175 of the 383 late 17th century household inventories in Groningen in which glassware is listed, seperately refer to both flesschen or botteljes. It is clear that from the mounts and decoration the latter refer to carafes.
