A large Toledo Spanish maiolica cuenca ornamental tile panel
16th century
Painted in lustred blue, green, ochre and white, with a central foliate ornamental motif within a triple circle, surrounded with four medallions, leaf corners (one tile loose)
6 x 7 tiles, 86cm. x 101.5cm.

Lot Essay

In the 16th century the 'Cuenca' technique was used in Spain, which involved pressing the pattern firmly on the clay tile to produce raised contours. The resulting compartments or cells kept the glazes separate.
