Woodcut title illustration and 125 large woodcut illustrations, some full-page, by Schäufelin, the Petrarca Master and probably by Johannes Weiditz, many within woodcut borders, numerous woodcut vignettes and initials. (Lacking final blank, A6 in facsimile, title a little soiled and outer margin strengthened, minor staining in quires Q and R and X, lower corner of X2, E1 and E3 torn and restored with slight loss of text, minor marginal tears.) Contemporary blind-tooled pigskin over wooden boards, brass clasps, spine on raised bands (rebacked at an early period). Provenance: M. von Fürstenberg? (early ownership inscription on title, deleted); Hans Teilnkes von Prespurg (18th-century bookplate on verso of last leaf).

FIRST EDITION of this collection and first German publication of many of these texts. The volume contains German translations of 'Cato maior de senectute' by Neuber; 'Tusculanae disputationes' liber I; 'Laelius de amicitia'; and by Schwarzenberg 'Büchlein vom Zutrinken', 'Lied wider das Mordlaster des Raubens', 'Memorial der Tugend', 'Kummertrost'. Adams C-1785 (has an extra quire *6 in his collation between Dd and Ee, not in the present or other copies); Worstbrock 163.
