HOMER (? 8th century B.C.). Odÿssea. Das seind die aller zierlichsten und lustigsten vier und zwaintzig bücher des eltisten kunst= reichesten Vatters aller Poeten Homeri. Translated into German by Simon Schaidenreisser, known as Minervius. Augsburg: Alexander Weißenhorn, 1537.
Small 2° (299 x 191mm). Collation: π6; A-Z4 a4 b6. Title with hand-coloured woodcut vignette, 18 woodcut illustrations in the text, all with old hand-colouring. (Leaves i, ii, vi and b6 strengthened at inner margin, some leaves neatly repaired at lower margins, occasional light soiling.) Modern calf, ruled and stamped in blind (slightly scuffed).
FIRST EDITION OF THE ODYSSEY IN GERMAN, and first edition of any work by Homer in German. The translator was town clerk at Munich. A second edition by Weißenhorn was published in the following year, using the same woodcuts. One of the cuts (on fol. IX) is by the Master N.H. from the school of Augsburg (and was also used in Weißenhorn's Apuleius, published in 1538): the remaining woodcuts are by another hand, strongly influenced by Breu.
