LINCOLN, ABRAHAM, President. Endorsement signed ("A Lincoln") as President, text in the handwriting of John Hay, his secretary, n.p. [Washington, D.C.], 11 April 1865. 1 page, a small oblong, 24 x 73 mm. (2 7/8 x 1 in.), probably clipped from a larger sheet (a petition?), framed with a tinted portrait, verso of frame with typed note "Framed with wood from [Lincoln's] first law office in Springfield, Illinois."
DATED TWO DAYS AFTER APPOMATTOX AND THREE DAYS BEFORE LINCOLN'S ASSASSINATION
Over Lincoln's signature Hay writes: "Let these men take the oath of Dec. 8 1863." Presumably cut from a petition seeking release of men held as rebels or rebel sympathizers. This type of petition came to Lincoln's desk with great frequency. Not published in Basler, Collected Works or Supplements.
