Lot Essay

This room faces the lake in the grounds of Compton Verney, a large eighteenth century house in Warwickshire. The situation of Compton Verney is beautiful, with the large lake crossed by a three-arch Georgian bridge set in a landscape with fine cedar trees, possibly laid out by Capability Brown. This room must be in the west range, built in 1714 for George Verney, 12th Lord Willoughby de Broke. Although the architect is unknown the manner is that of Vanbrugh. The solid wood panels at the bottom of the sashes, which open to allow access to the park, may have been used to preserve a unity in the rhythm of fenestration. The furnishings seem to be of the period of Robert Adam's alterations after 1760 for John Peyto, 14th Lord Willoughby de Broke
