Lot Essay

It is likely this is the same picture mentioned in Cardosa op. cit., no. 445, but the measurements are slightly different (35.5 x 27.5cm.) and there is no mention of the signature and inscription. It is comparable to a number of other architectural sketches of 1868, Porta della Moschea del Sultano Ahmet, Porta della Moschea di Ali Chilich Pascia, Porta della Moschea del Sultano Bajazid, and Porta laterale della Moschea di S. Sofia, Cardosa, op. cit., nos. 444, 446, 447 and 448.

'Pasini was probably the best-known Orientalist artist of foreign origin in France. He found a ready sale for his canvases through the Parisian dealer Goupil, and had a faithful following of American visitors to The Salon.' (L. Thornton, The Orientalists Painter-Travellers, 1828-1908, Paris, 1983, p. 124)
