Lot Essay

Chlebowski was a pupil of Gérôme, painting in the 'academic tradition with excellent details and a high finish'. 'Introduced into the court circles of Sultan Abdul Aziz in Constantinople, he painted episodes of the history of Turkey as well as scenes of everyday Turkish life.' (L. Thornton, The Orientalists Painter-Travellers, 1828-1908, Paris, 1983, p. 258)
