Lot Essay

In the catalogue of the 1992 exhibition on Clodion, Guilhem Scherf discusses various sales of Clodion and Clodion-related objects. Among these, it is noted that oval versions of the present reliefs were first documented in a bequest to the library at Versailles in 1898 (loc.cit.). Since that time, the reliefs have been referred to as both 'attributed' and 'autograph' works, although Scherf also raises the possibility that they are creations of the late 19th century, when renewed interest in Clodion was at its apogee.
