Lot Essay

Although it does not feature in Francesco Righetti's 1794 catalogue of stock, the present bronze is by no means untypical of his oeuvre, which comprised reductions of renaissance and baroque favourites as well as antiquities. The medallion on the socle, with its dedicatory inscription eulogising Pope Pius VII as a second Moses, dates the present example to after his election in 1800, and adds considerably to its interest.
