AN APULIAN RED-FIGURE AMPHORA
attributed to the baltimore painter
circa 325 b.c.
Divided into two registers by a scrolling band on the A-side, a band of swastika-meander on the B-side, the upper register of the A-side with a scene from the Iliupersis, at center the Palladium, the cult statue of Athena in her temple at Troy which was believed to have protective powers, with Helen at left and Cassandra at right seeking refuge in her presence, Helen lunging forward with her arms embracing the statue, Cassandra grasping on to Athena's arm as her head is yanked back by Ajax who, with a sword in his hand, is looking back at her while moving right toward a fleeing Trojan woman, to the left Aphrodite restrains an attacking Menelaos who lunges toward the action with sword raised and shield held in front of him; the neck with a diamond pattern, the shoulder with a female head in three-quarter view to the right amidst florals above a band of ovolo, the lower register a continuous frieze encircling the vase, with a stela centered on the A-side, with offering-bearers on either side, a seated woman centered on the B-side flanked by two Erotes, a band of meander with saltire squares below; the upper register of the B-Side with Dionysus seated between four figures, a satyr and a woman with offerings to the left, a woman and Eros with offerings to the right, the neck striped, the shoulder with the left profile head of a winged goddess, perhaps Nike, amidst florals, a band of ovolo below, palmette complexes below the handles, a band of ivy in added white on the rim, palmettes below, laurel on the handles
