A THURINGIAN GILT SILVER BOW BROOCH
circa early 6th century a.d.
Cast with a kidney-shaped head-plate, modelled in the form of two profile bird heads joined at the necks, their beaks turned in towards the bow, each eye set with a glass cabochon, blue in color with white swirls, the head-plate with geometric chip-carved ornament, the bow with chip-carved key pattern on either side of a central rib, the tear-shaped foot-plate with a field of chip-carved ornament around a key-pattern, the end set with a similar glass cabochon, from which projects a flat, bi-lobed terminal with chip-carved ornament in the form of a stylized animal mask
