THREE GERMANIC BROOCHES AND A BUCKLE
circa 5th century a.d.
Including a gilt-silver bow brooch, the head-plate with three semi-circular knobs, decorated with a chip-carved geometric pattern, the arched bow with a central line of opposing niello triangles, with shallow, semi-circular projections at the join to the long foot-plate which terminates in two lobes, the foot-plate with linear chip-carved ornament, its flat rim with opposing niello triangles; a bronze cruciform brooch cast with a flat, square head-plate surmounted by an oval knob with a disk at its base, originally with similar knobs on either side of the plate secured by the iron axis of the pin-spring, the high bow notched and incised at both ends, the long, narrow, faceted foot with a terminal in the form of a stylized horse head; a copper-alloy brooch cast with a semi-circular head-plate with chip-carved linear ornament radiating from the base of the bow, with three small knobs along the edge, the bow triangular in section, the lozenge-shaped foot-plate with chip-carved concentric linear pattern, the notched and ribbed terminal with a flat semi-circular projection; and a Germanic or Byzantine gilt bronze belt buckle with an oval loop, circular in section, and a club-shaped tongue, the attachment-plate a folded, rectangular sheet notched to recieve the loop and tongue, and faceted along three sides of the front, with two domed-headed rivets, traces of leather on the interior
