Lot Essay

Based on the placement of the funnel on this ship which was refitted, this piece has been identified as the Tennessee, formerly the Madawaska. This vessel was built in the Brooklyn Navy Yard in New York and was owned by the U.S. Navy. Two paintings are listed in Henry Sniffen Antonio Jacobsen: The Checklist (New York, 1984)pp. 284-285. The first painted in 1886 and signed A. Jac. is owned by Seamen's Bank in New York. The second painted in 1916 signed Ant. Jac. is owned privately.
