Lot Essay

Farquharson was born in Edinburgh, the son of a doctor and amateur artist. He studied with the landscape painter Peter Graham before enrolling at the Trustees' Academy and the RSA Life Class. From 1880 he spent three or four winters in Paris at the atelier of Carolus-Duran and exhibited at the Salon. The subject of the present picture is the garden at Finzean, his Aberdeenshire family home in the Dee Valley.
