Lot Essay

A similiar, but larger, cup in the Al-Tajir Collection probably served as the model for this cup. Dating to 1834 and depicting a battle scene of Romans and barbarians, it is illustrated in The Glory of the Goldsmith: Magnificent Gold and Silver from the Al-Tajir Collection, 1989, no. 167, p. 216.
