Lot Essay

The present lot belongs to a group of carved lacquer wares which depict figures in pavilion and landscape scenes, a subject matter that was highly favoured for the material, as the skill and technique of the carver are well accentuated. The artist has created a sense of depth and perspective on the flat surface by using different layers of lacquer. In addition, the intricate diaper patterns not only serve as decorative elements but help in differentiating the ground from water and from air.

This impressively large box with basketwork features was used to contain food and the lattices allowed the food be aerated. As indicated by the lotus blooms, normally associated with Summer, this box was probably used for the storage of food away from flies and insects in hot weather.

A related lacquered gold octagonal box and cover, also decorated with similar basketwork and dated to the mid-Qing period, in the Palace Museum, Beijing, is illustrated in Zhongguo Qiqi Quanji, vol. 6, Qing, p. 144, no. 154.
