Lot Essay

Both Lauvergnat l'aîné, active 1749/52/54-72/73, and Lauvergnat jeune, active 1754-74/75, were soft-paste repareurs at Sèvres. This more scrolled L is found on items from circa 1753-75, especially plates and including sucriers and seaux, and sometimes on vases and baskets of the 1760's.

The exuberant ormolu mounts reflect the influence of the English marchand-mercier Edward Holmes Baldock (d.1845), who was instrumental in promoting the fashion for French ormolu-mounted objects in England initiated by George, Prince of Wales, later George IV and his circle. A related pair of Sèvres pots-à-oille du Roi with English Rococo revival dolphin mounts was amongst the 209 pieces of Sèvres sold to the 5th Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry between April 1830 and May 1831 (R. Savill, 'The Sèvres Porcelain Collection of the 5th Duke and Duchess of Buccleuch', Boughton House, The English Versailles, London, 1992, pp.142-51, pl.82 and 85).
