Lot Essay

This armchair can be firmly attributed to the workshop of cabinet-maker Giles Grendey (1693-1780) of St. Johns Square, Clerkenwell, London, based on the labelled Gunton Park suite which differs in that the knees have the further embellishment of crossed foliate branches that enclose the carved husk (see 'Furniture by Giles Grendey', preceding lot 230).
A virtually identical library chair covered in eighteenth century needlework was sold, the Property of a Southern Collector, in these Rooms, 22 April 1989, lot 37. Other chairs of the 'Grendey' model with scroll feet include a library chair (with uncarved back legs) sold anonymously, Sotheby's London, 15 November 1985, lot 44 (£20,900); and various sets of side chairs, including most recently a set of six, from a Distinguished West Coast Collection, sold in these Rooms, 16 October 1998, lot 32.
