Each well potted with a globular lower body and short neck ending in a flared mouth rim, covered overall with a pale ash-gray glaze of even tone suffused with a network of dark and lighter crackling, the foot pierced on two sides and covered on the bottom with a brown wash

Lot Essay

This pair of vases would be based on a Song dynasty prototype, such as the vase inscribed on the base with an ode composed by Qianlong, included in the Illustrated Catalogue of Chinese Government Exhibits for the International Exhibition of Chinese Art in London, vol. II, Nanking, 1948, no. 105 and another, or possibly the same vase, illustrated in Zhongguo taoci daxi (Chinese Ceramics Series), Song/Yuan taoci daquan (Song and Yuan Ceramics), Taipei, 1988, p. 476
