Though recorded as participating in the exhibitions at the Academia in Berlin in 1846, 1856 and 1864, few works by this German artist are known. The present composition is based on the painting by Antonio Canaletto previously in the collection of Lord Taunton, Quantock Lodge, Somerset, subsequently sold at Sotheby's, London, July 12, 1972, lot 15 (see W. G. Constable, Canaletto, 2nd ed., revised by J. G. Links, 1976, I,
pl. 199, II, no. 227d).
