THOMAS GAMBIER PARRY (1816-1888), fresco painter; GEORGE FREDERICK WATTS (1817-1904) and others
An 8pp. a.l.s., dated Higham Court Gloucester Nov 2 1857, from Parry to an unidentified correspondent, giving his views on church architecture. 'The only tradesman who knows anything of church decoration is Crace who worked with and under Pugin ... I don't wonder at your difficulty ... There are only 3 grades in any delineation (1) Naturalist copy which you would mistake for real (2) conventional suggestion ... or (3) charicature ... (2) comes nearest to church work ... if you wish to decorate architecture you had better architecturalise your designs -- architecturalise, symbolise, conventionalise, are all synonyms. I grant you you must study in a friend's hothouse before you can draw a vine leaf, and you must draw one perfectly before you can conventionalise'; and a collection of seven a.l.s. from George Frederick Watts, including a miniature letter (3½ x 4½in.) signed 'Signor' in Italian to a baby; and other letters from Sir George Hayter (1792-1871), Sir Hubert von Herkomer (1849-1914) and Sir William Blake (1842-1921).
