The tapestries were originally commissioned by Lord Howard, Lord Admiral of the British Fleet. They were destroyed by a fire at the House of Lords in 1834, leaving these engravings as the only record.

13 plates, including all the views of the 2 fleets, are dated 1739 (the year of the first edition), 2 of the charts are dated 1740 and the 4 plates of the House of Commons are 1749.
