Lot Essay
Golden Fleece, 1475 tons, was a medium clipper built by Paul Curtis in 1855 for Weld & Baker of Boston. Curtis's second ship of this name, she was said to be his finest creation. Employed in the California trade for her entire career, she was a popular ship with consignors thanks to her uniformly good passage times and the excellent condition in which she delivered her cargoes. All but one of her passages form eastern ports were to San Francisco, the exception being an eventful voyage from Boston to Bombay in 1871 with a cargo of ice. In November 1877, Golden Fleece ran aground in the River Plate estuary and was so badly damaged she was condemned and sold, probably for breaking.
