Lot Essay

The Clipper Blue Jacket, 1403 tons, was built by Robert Jackson of East Boston in 1854. Her first owners were Seccomb & Taylor of Boston although they sold her to J.J. Frost for his Fox Line of Australian packets soon after her first arrival in England. Her maiden passage to Melbourne of 68 days was exceptionally fast and beat the initial passages of many of the famous clippers of the day. She was a fast sailer throughout her career and her fastest-ever run was from Lyttleton, New Zealand, to London in 63 days in 1865. On her final voyage in 1869, she caught fire 20 days out from Lyttleton and was burned out, her passengers and crew being rescued by the barque Pyrmont.
