The American schooner John W. Smart appears to have been built at Newmarket, New Hampshire, in 1885 and operated out of various New England ports before being listed in Tampa, Florida, in 1897. Sold with this painting is a pencilled log of the John W. Smart covering the first four months of 1887 and including some references to whaling activities.
