EARLY LETTER VALENTINE
A letter valentine with embossed border and hand-coloured centre, the border blind stamped at various intervals in french 'Je noublierai jamais', 'Je ne cherche qu'un', 'loyal en tout', 'Je blesse mais j'attache', 'Je meur ou je m'attache' and 'En la robe je fleurie', with manuscript inscription above and below the centre-piece 'I own I have often seen you, when I thought you would have seen or spoken to me, this being a time or custom to write, I trust you will not think me making too free. If doing so too you, I hope I shall see you after to-day - My respects', and below 'I have no wealth for to impart, Industry or an honest heart, use this, refuse them, or back to me them send, I know your honour's such, you'll not betray a friend', sent to 'Miss Nancy Williamson, High Street, Annan', stamp marked Annan, circa 1820-30, framed and glazed, 9½ x 7½in.
