AN ATTRACTIVE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION. "All the pieces in the first volume were by Johnson, and most of those in the second. Boswell says that these volumes were published during Johnson's absence and advertised by Davies as 'by the author of the Rambler.' But the second volume contained several pieces which were not by Johnson, who was at first very angry at the liberty which Davies had taken. A third volume, dated 1774 and containing more pieces by Johnson, was issued as the property of 'T. Davies ... and Carnan and Newbery, St. Paul's Church Yard'. A 'second edition, corrected' of the first two volumes was published in 1774, but the title-page was the only novelty" (Courtney).
