Dutch edition of Mendes Pinto's Peregrinaçam (Lisbon 1614), a classic account of the Portuguese explorer's travels through Asia between 1537 and 1557, and an important source for later Portuguese exploration. Mendes Pinto has traditionally been credited with the discovery of Japan (in 1542); he was certainly one of its earliest European visitors, and he helped St Francis Xavier establish a jesuit colony there. Rare edition; not in Palau.

PROVENANCE:
Extensive bibliographical notes, mainly in Dutch, in a nineteenth-century hand, in ink on front and rear endpapers; page numerals keyed to another edition inscribed in margins throughout.
