CHARLES I (1600-49)

Details
CHARLES I (1600-49)
"Annals of King Charles" [from 1625 to 1642 only], 12 vols., 2°, MANUSCRIPT, approximately 6532 leaves, the first 10 foliating from p. 1 to p. 4773, and the last 2 from p. 407 to p. 2166, written in several hands but with one hand, perhaps the compiler's, appearing in all vols. in a critical and editorial capacity, contemporary calf (worn).

This compilation is based almost entirely on printed histories of the reign and appears to have been completed by about 1725. It draws heavily on the Journals of the Houses of Lords and Commons, Rushworth's Historical Collections, the histories of Clarendon and Whitelocke, as well as the works of later popular historians such as Echard, Frankland, D'Orleans, L'Estrange and De Larrey. Although the work is largely derivative, the author does occasionally put forward his own interpretation of events. (13)
