A PAIR OF SOUTH GERMAN GILT-WALNUT ARMCHAIRS

Each with foliate-carved back and pierced toprail, the arms and squab cushion covered in faded red close-nailed velvet above a assymetrical foliate apron on cabriole legs, one chair with front leg replaced and with restoration to the seat rails, the back rail with unused construction slot, presumably a change of heart at the time of making (2)

Lot Essay

These fauteuils were probably supplied to a South German Court, and display influences of Munich rococo chair-making. A related but larger fauteuil, with similar rockwork angles, which is in the Residenz in Munich, is illustrated in G. Hojer H. Ottomeyer, Die Möbel der Residenz München, Munich, 1996, vol II, p. 191.
