Lot Essay

The attribution to, George Bullock, of this distinctive design for a fire basket was first made in the exhibition catalogue, The Fashionable Fireplace, 1660 - 1840, Temple Newsam House, 1985, p.30. No. 22.
The suggestion appears to be confirmed by an unsigned pencil drawing by George Bullock at Tew Park, Great Tew, Oxfordshire, and inscribed in his hand 'Plan of Stove in Dining Room and Oak Study'.

Four related examples were sold at Great Tew Park, Christie's House Sale, 27 - 29 May 1987, lots 4, 27, 48 and 155. The design illustrated p.39.
