In the 1899-1900 F.A. Cup final, played at the Crystal Palace, before 68,000 spectators, Bury defeated Southampton 4-0. The goal-scorers for Bury in the final were McLuckie (2), Wood and Plant.
George W. Ross was born at Mulben, Morayshire on 29th November 1869 and his family moved to Darwen, Lancashire in 1881. In 1883 he moved to Bury and played for the local side Bury Wesleyans. Thereafter he played for Bury Unitarians before finally joining Bury F.C. in 1886. He made his debut for the club against Everton on 26th February 1887 and he scored twice in a 4-1 win. In August 1893 he was made vice-captain of the club and helped his side from Lancashire League Football that season to finally appearing in Division 1 in 1895. He played for the Shakers for 20 years and won a Division 2 Championship and two F.A. Cup winner's medals. In the 1903 F.A. Cup final against Derby County he was captain of the side and scorer of the first goal in an emphatic 6-0 win.
