Lot Essay

Andrew MacPherson of Cluny was the 15th Chief succeeding his grandfather since his father Ewan who was one of the Montrose's leaders had died before succeeding to the Chieftainship of the Clan. Alexander Brodie of Brodie in his diary "The Brodies of Brodie" describes Andrew MacPherson as follows "he was an Absalom for beauty, a Joseph for continence, a Tully for eloquance and a Jonathan for friendship."
The above portrait seems to be one of a small number of related portraits of Andrew MacPherson which were not painted during his life but about 60 years later.
