Lot Essay

A similar slightly smaller box but with identical painting in the interior is in the Sir Victor Sassoon Chinese Ivories Trust Collection, no. T78. Another, from the Richard Milhender Collection, is illustrated by Carl L. Crossman, The Decorative Arts of the China Trade, 1991, colour plate 108, where the author comments "This wonderfully carved and painted box illustrates the combined talents of a fine ivory carver and a port or miniature painter".
